Years ago, I stumble across innovation games by Luke Hohmann and I was hooked. What a creative concept – make software product planning fun and enjoyable. My favorite game is Buy The Feature. Deal out cash or poker chips to all the stakeholders and tell them to place their money/chips on the features that are most important to them. They place as little or as much as they have on each feature until all the money/chips runs out.

There are games for brainstorming ideas, which are great – but I still feel that the most creative ideas comes from adventures and not being confined to a meeting room, video conference line, or an online game. I heard rumors about Samsung sending their Futurists to the most remote places on the planet to be creative and visionary. I have to admit, given the opportunity, I think all of us can be creative if the environment is inspiring.

But yes, not all of us can be that fortunate. For that, I think at least making the brain storming/short listing (prioritizing) feature sessions fun and interactive is the next best thing. Below are some of the popular games you aught to try!

The Empathy Map is one of XPLANE’s methods for understanding players in your business ecosystem.

Prune the Product Tree is a great game for eliciting feedback from customers. This version is adapted for conference/event offerings.

Bang for the Buck is a game to collaboratively rank a project backlog based on estimated value and estimated cost.
